Gingivectomy is a surgical procedure that removes excess gum tissue (gingiva) for both functional (gum disease treatment) and aesthetic purposes.
It can be used to treat gum disease (periodontitis) by removing loose, diseased tissue and reshaping the gum line to eliminate deep pockets where plaque and bacteria can accumulate.
Gingivectomy is also a safe and common cosmetic procedure used to address concerns like a "gummy smile" or uneven gum lines, reshaping the gums for a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing smile.
At SameDay Dental Clinic, we use modern techniques and laser technology to eliminate hypertrophic gum and give our patients a more confident and harmonious smile.
Most gingivectomy procedures can be completed within a few minutes to an hour. The duration of the treatment will depend on how much of gum tissue needs to be removed
Some soreness and sensitivity are normal for a few days after your procedure. This is manageable with over-the-counter pain medications. It’s important that you brush your teeth gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush and follow any additional care and diet instructions provided by your dentist.
Many patients return to work or school within a day or two following gingivectomy. For optimal healing, it's recommended to avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting during this time.
